Only the Servants Knew

The master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew (John 2:9).

Our Lord Jesus let us in on one of heaven’s best kept secrets.

When the disciples were arguing over which one of them was the greatest, Jesus told them (and anyone else listening):

If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, learn to be the servant of all (Matthew 23:11).

Probably not what any of them wanted to hear…

But humility that makes itself small and sees others as worthy objects of service, is a worthwhile pursuit.

We are called to have the same mindset as Christ, the Servant of all, but it’s an attitude that doesn’t come natural or easy, but it’s worth the effort.

Think of it—turning the water into wine is Jesus’ first recorded miracle.

And who gets to see it?

Who is privileged to be used to be a part of it?

Only the servants.

No one attending the wedding has a clue that God has just done a miracle in their midst—except the servants who were busy taking orders and doing the grunt work.

And that, my friends, is how it usually goes, especially in ministry settings.

Those who are rolling up their sleeves and doing the work get front row seats to watch (and experience) the Lord move in miraculous and providential ways.

God meets needs, encourages the downhearted, heals and restores lives, and advances the gospel—through those who serve.

Servants see God answer prayers because oftentimes, they themselves are that answer—at least in part.

Because when the Lord wants to do something in someone’s life, He needs a hand… or some feet, or some arms, or a mouth.

And in the wake of being used by God (even in the least significant of ways), we thrive.

Others may hear about the good thing God has done, but it’s the servants who are usually right there in the middle of all the action.

And when that’s the case, you can’t help but grow in the knowledge of Christ, the grace of God, and the assurance of your faith.

I’m sure everyone at the wedding in Cana had a great time, but most of them had no clue as to how great of a wedding it actually was!

A miracle working Savior was standing in their midst, and He had just done an astonishing miracle.

And only the servants knew.
